After your gastric lapband surgery, you will meet with a dietician who will explain in detail the diet that you will be required to follow. This is one of the many reasons why it is so important to be fully committed to the lapband diet before you have the surgery. In the first three to four days after the procedure, patients are required to follow a clear liquid diet. If you dont adhere to this diet, you risk complications like band erosion or slippage. These complications may require additional surgery.

You will also not be able to have caffeinated beverages, including coffee, tea, and soda, for the three months after surgery. This may include caffeine free sodas as well, since carbonation has been shown to increase gas, bloating, and stomach size. Check with your dietician and your surgeon for their recommendations before consuming any carbonated beverages.

After the first three to four days, you will follow a modified liquid diet; with the goal of consuming two ounces of a protein based shake every hour for ten to twelve hours each day, along with two ounces of other approved liquids. By the second six weeks, you will be able to eat foods that have been shredded in a food processor, and your dietician will provide you with a list of approved foods.

It is important to remember that eating after lap band surgery means taking small bites and eating no more than four to six ounces of food at every meal. Patients should also make sure that they get adequate protein.
